Community Empowerment

Environmental Education Expansion.

Environmental education at Sango is grounded in long-standing community engagement. Since the late 2000s, Sango has been organising school day trips and weekend excursions for students from surrounding communities.

In 2024 alone, six primary schools and one secondary school were hosted at Sango, reaching around 150 children, and their teachers. With transportation, meals, and guided interpretation of natural systems all provided, each visit is designed to be both memorable and transformative.

While the program has grown organically over the years, Sango now recognises the importance of developing a formal environmental education strategy. This will include an annual action plan, budget, and operational framework to guide the initiative sustainably and maximise its reach and effectiveness.

Building on the current model, Sango’s next steps include enhancing the quality and frequency of engagement around environmental stakes. Plans are underway to introduce new educational materials, such as new posters, colouring and school books. These resources will reinforce messages delivered during excursions and broaden the reach to students who may not yet have the opportunity to visit Sango.

Additionally, Sango will explore in-school visits by trained conservation ambassadors—trusted individuals from the local area who can regularly visit classrooms and provide relatable, place-based conservation education. This two-pronged approach—bringing students to nature and bringing nature to students—aims to deepen awareness and foster a culture of stewardship from a young age.

By investing in environmental education now, Sango is helping to build the foundations for a generation of environmentally literate, conservation-minded youth who can lead Zimbabwe—and the world—toward a more sustainable future.
