Our Ambitions

Community Empowerment

Strengthening Local Livelihoods Through Sustainable Development.

Recognising that long-term ecological protection is only possible when local people are part of the solution, Sango intends to take part in livelihood diversification as part of its outreach strategy. These actions contribute directly to reducing environmental pressure and promoting a shared responsibility for safeguarding biodiversity.

Many households living adjacent to the conservancy rely on subsistence farming in one of Zimbabwe’s most arid regions. Sango aims to support communities in exploring alternative income-generating opportunities that are both ecologically sustainable and economically viable. Whether through small-scale enterprise development, agricultural improvements, or access to local markets, the goal is to empower communities while reinforcing the value of conservation.

Though still at an early stage, Sango has begun laying the groundwork for conservation-compatible value chains. In collaboration with African Tracking Specialists (ATS), the conservancy initiated a beekeeping project in 2024. Beehives were built at Sango’s own workshop and distributed to the wives of rangers [See Women fence guardian page]. These women received training in beekeeping, and hives were placed within Sango’s natural landscape—linking income opportunities directly to the preservation of wild areas.

Other promising ventures under consideration include sunflower and sesame cultivation, with the potential for Sango to act as both a buyer and facilitator for market access.

Through these efforts Sango aims at demonstrating that conservation and community development can go hand in hand, creating a foundation of shared purpose and long-term sustainability.
